The Board of Trustees will consider a proposal this month, to initiate a mandatory, at least 20 minutes of daily recess in The Dallas Independent School District (ISD).
A policy regarding compulsory recess in elementary campuses, as suggested by Trustee, Dan Micciche during last month and the time period for the recess, as recommended by the administrators of the DISD. The proposal will be discussed during the Board meeting and they are scheduled to vote on it during the ordinary board meeting on January 28. The changes will be effected immediately.
The district schools said that, recess will encourage student to student interactions in the schools. The proposal will also help in avoiding the minor crimes which are resulted due to banning students from recess.
Mr. Micciche said to the fellow trustees during a board meeting held last month, that, “Recess for our students varies from school to school, and even within schools. Many parents have spoken to me over the years that I’ve been on the board that children don’t get enough recess, and they’ve also mentioned that recess has been taken away for minor misbehavior.” These are no critic of the proposal, but trustees are concerned about the timings that how to fit a recess with tight testing schedule. According to the law, students still need to attend the classes of physical education.
