Heat exhaustion occurs when the body overheats from extended exposure to high temperatures, particularly in combination with high humidity and vigorous physical exertion. One of the most prevalent early indicators of heat exhaustion is excessive sweating, which signals the body's effort to regulate its temperature. In addition to sweating, affected individuals may notice their skin becoming cool, pale, and clammy, along with muscle cramps—most often in the legs or abdomen. Feelings of fatigue, weakness, and a general malaise typically follow these symptoms.

Dizziness or fainting, often linked to decreased blood flow to the brain caused by dehydration, is another significant warning sign. Other symptoms can include headaches, nausea, and vomiting. The pulse of the person may become quick and weak, and they may express feelings of lightheadedness or confusion. It is vital to respond swiftly if these signs emerge. Relocate the person to a shaded or cooler environment, loosen any restrictive clothing, and provide water or a sports drink. Applying cool, damp cloths or utilizing fans can also assist in cooling the body. Should the symptoms escalate or fail to improve after half an hour, it is critical to seek medical intervention immediately, as prolonged heat exhaustion can progress to heatstroke, which poses serious health risks.

Certain demographics, including the elderly, young children, individuals with chronic health conditions, and those engaged in outdoor work, are especially at risk. Preventive measures such as wearing light clothing, maintaining hydration, and steering clear of strenuous activities during the hottest parts of the day can help mitigate the risk of heat exhaustion.

Being able to identify these symptoms early and responding properly can prove invaluable. As summer temperatures rise, being aware and taking swift action can be your best protection against heat-related health issues.
