
The Dallas County Health and Human Services officials are investigating on a mumps outbreak in the Cedar Hill Independent School District.
Twenty-three students and staff were diagnosed at the Cedar Hill High School with mumps in the past three weeks and an additional nine cases are under investigation.
The students who are diagnosed with the infections have documentation of two prior doses of vaccines, the Dallas County Health and Human Services (DCHHS) is recommending students and staffs get an additional third booster of MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine.
Zach Thompson the director of DCHHS said that all the students infected students had their two doses of vaccine.
“We may be dealing with the fact that the vaccine has waned and we will be dealing with a third dose recommendation in the future,” he said.
DCHHS said, over the past few months the North Texas has been experiencing an increase in mumps cases, including unrelated outbreaks in neighboring Counties”.
According to Dr Elvin Adams of Johnson County, an ongoing outbreak in Johnson County is beginning to subside.
Mumps symptoms are puffy cheeks and a swollen jaw and may be accompanied by a fever, aches and fatigue. But, some people may remain without symptoms. It is spread through the saliva or mucus of an infected person.
