Nothing OS 4.0 update has begun to be made available for eligible Nothing Phone devices, as announced by the technology firm led by Carl Pei on Friday. The user interface based on Android 16 was initially presented by the company in September. This update includes revamped interface components and fresh functionalities, such as a dashboard for AI usage, a new TrueLens Engine that boosts camera and gallery performance, and multiple AI-driven creative tools found in the Essential Apps. Moreover, Nothing OS 4.0 provides Live Updates through the Glyph Interface and introduces an Extra Dark Mode, which is claimed to help save battery life. The UK-based smartphone manufacturer revealed on Friday that it has commenced the release of the Android 16-based Nothing OS 4.0 firmware update for specific eligible phones. The tech company confirmed that this update is currently available only for the Nothing Phone 3. However, Nothing intends to release the firmware update for CMF smartphones soon. Despite this, the company has not yet shared the complete schedule for the Android 16-based Nothing OS 4.0 launch.

When it comes to features, the Android 16-based update includes many new AI functions and design tweaks. Nothing OS 4.0 brings Live Updates via the Glyph Interface, which shows real-time information about rides, deliveries, and timers on your display, as well as on the Glyph Interface located on the back. Apps that can use the Live Updates feature in Android 16 are expected to start using the Glyph Progress feature. This new Nothing OS 4.0 update also introduces Extra Dark Mode for Nothing Phone models, which is said to enhance contrast, show deeper blacks, decrease battery use, and provide a more pleasant viewing experience in low-light conditions. The Extra Dark Mode will also be available in Essential Space and Launcher. The Android 16-based firmware features new animations for opening and closing apps, haptic feedback that responds at volume limits, and improved notifications. Additionally, users will be able to adjust the sizes of the Weather, Pedometer, and Screen Time widgets to 1x1 and 2x1 formats.
Additionally, Nothing OS 4.0 allows users to conceal any app they choose from the app drawer. It also introduces a pop-up view function, enabling users to open two apps in separate floating windows. They can easily switch between these apps using swipe motions as well. Lastly, owners of the Nothing Phone 3 will gain access to new Flip to Glyph controls, enhanced Pocket Mode, and new Glyph Toys. Furthermore, the Glyph Mirror Selfie feature now allows users to save the original image as "an extra photo" in the Gallery app.
